Another
cracker from Edition Records, this album features, alongside pianist/composer
Ivo Neame, vibes player Jim Hart, bassist Jasper Høiby and drummer
James Maddren.
Regular Vortex patrons will need little more than this personnel listing to tell them how powerfully and sensitively Neame's music is played: over one of the most intense yet thoughtful rhythm sections currently operating in the UK, two of the country's most resourceful soloists stretch out and strike sparks off each other on seven varied but consistently absorbing Neame compositions.
A front-line pairing of piano and vibes could easily have been ill-advised, the instruments' sounds too similar to work effectively in tandem, but Neame and Hart are skilful and practised collaborators, whether weaving round each other or (occasionally) playing in chiming unison, and the resulting album, while relatively complex and sophisticated, revealing fresh felicities on each exposure to it, is immediately appealing, fresh and stimulating, courtesy not only of the infectious enthusiasm and commitment of Neame's band but also of the sheer classiness of his writing for it. Recommended.
