'How
I miss Brazil/I've been away a while/The cold is killing me/No one sees
me on the subway' or 'I walk in the void/Without your eyes/I wander in darkness'
are not lyrics consistent with the stereotypical view of Brazilian singer-songwriters,
butŠ despite the fact that his voice's overall timbre and his gently insinuating,
intimate approach somewhat resemble Caetano Veloso'sŠ Vinicius Cantuaria
is a highly original, individual talent.
A resident of New York, he draws freely on the musical talent of that city Š saxophonist David Binney, cellist Eric Friedlander, trumpeter Michael Leonhart, pianist Brad Mehldau, guitarist Marc Ribot, violinist Jenny Scheinman, percussionist Marivaldo Dos Santos are his judiciously used guests Š to accentuate the dark poignancy, brooding melancholy or (occasional) grateful joy of his songs.
Suffused with yearning and resignation, but enlivened by a recognition of the redeeming power of hopeful self-relianceŠ 'I'm getting no poorer/I'm getting no richer/I'm getting no sadder/I won't be let down/I won't sit here waiting/I won't get all upset/I've got a hold of myself/And of my solitude/And I believe' Š Cymbals is consistently affecting and subtly compulsive.
