Recorded at the old Vortex on 28 September 1997 by Andy Isham, this album comprises two extended improvisations from masters in the field: three-quarters of a band Elton Dean himself regarded as 'the best band since Coltrane's', Mujician, plus the late great saxophonist himself, operating on alto and saxello.
Isham perfectly sums up Dean's playing as 'heartfelt and beautiful'; on this recording, his unique sound is tellingly complemented by that of one of the most passionate, eloquent tenors in the music, Paul Dunmall, and propelled by the doyen of improvised-music rhythm sections, volcanic drummer Tony Levin and powerhouse bassist Paul Rogers.
Not that the mood is tear-it-up throughout; there is much welcome light and shade, and the result is like a four-way conversation ranging over a variety of topics, yet always relevant, never flagging in its intensity, consistently absorbing.
All proceeds from the sale of the CD (which can be obtained by sending a £10 cheque to Andy Isham at The Flat, Blackcroft, Honiley, Warwickshire CV8 1NP) will go to Dean's widow; there is also a memorial gig scheduled at the 100 Club on 9 May.
