Vibes
player Jim Hart lists Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler and Keith
Jarrett as his main compositional influences, and certainly the mellifluous
lyricism that characterises their work can be discerned in his; in bassist
Michael Coady and drummer Tom Skinner, however, Gemini have a a rhythm
section bristling with the power and crackling energy that seem to typify
new-millennium jazz.
Ivo Neame, an alto player with a slightly dry, thoughtful sound, completes the line-up, but it is the unassumingly virtuosic Hart who seizes the attention throughout a programme skilfully arranged to include everything from tricksy bustlers, hints of Caribbean rhythms, driving straightahead jazz and softly crooned ballads. As a calling card for their live act, or as a treat in itself, a creditable debut for an accomplished band.
