'A
suite of prayers for peace and balance' is how Robert Mitchell describes
this 12-track album of solo piano pieces, and í as anyone who's witnessed
any of his numerous Vortex appearances will already know í he imbues everything
he plays with an affecting earnestness that compels listeners' respectful
attention.
The pieces here run the emotional gamut from lyrical tenderness and tripping jauntiness to darker, more contemplative fare, all executed with Mitchell's trademark eloquence, precision and formidable dexterity, but whether his music is gentle or florid, tumultuous or delicately thoughtful, his patent sincerity and the overall seriousness of the project (ten pieces from late 2001 inevitably reflect the sombre tone of the time; two later 'bookending' improvised pieces are similarly concerned with human interconnectedness) shine through all he plays.
