A
debut album from a strong-voiced singer backed by a discreetly powerful
rhythm section ç pianist Liam Noble, bassist Amy Baldwin, drummer Jim
Hart ç First Reflection contains the conventional mix of standards/jazz
classics ('Never Will I Marry', 'Autumn Leaves', 'You Must Believe in
Spring', 'Lullaby of Birdland', 'Speak Low', 'If I Should Lose You', 'My
Romance') and originals, all intelligently and confidently addressed,
but is notable in two ways: singer Anjali Perin is an unusually adept
scat singer and a convincing composer of vocalese.
The former skill considerably enlivens the aforementioned Loesser opener and the last-named Rodgers/Hart classic; the vocalese is deployed sparingly but tellingly on 'Autumn Leaves' (Miles Davis's solo on Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else the source) and 'You Must Believe in Spring' (Bill Evans's bassist Eddie Gomez the source for this one).
Concluding with a plaintive, touching original on which Perin accompanies herself on piano, this is a pleasingly varied set from a talented newcomer to the UK vocal scene.
