Gwyneth Herbert and Will Rutter

First Songs

UCJ

Album description

One of the most refreshing acts in the music industry, Gwyneth Herbert and Will Rutter have been propelled into the public eye with their debut album, First Songs.

Still in their early twenties the duo have an extraordinary talent, combining a worldly, seductive voice and sympathetic guitar playing with an emotional range and depth that totally belies their tender years. Their song-writing skills are something of a real rarity in jazz, penning instantly memorable tunes and fantastically astute lyrics.

First Songs is a real eclectic mixture, from old standards, Gershwin, Cole Porter to Neil Young and Portishead; it also features three originals, which sit comfortably with ten covers.

The album also features Jamie Cullum (whom they supported on tour) in a vocal duo on "Sweet Insomnia" (a Gwyn and Will original) and trumpeter Guy Barker (twice Mercury Album of the Year Nominee and musical star of The Talented Mr Ripley) plays on "Trains and Boats and Planes".

Gwyn and Will have been performing together for several years after meeting at Durham University where they began playing together. They then developed their repertoire through gigs before being taken on by Peter Wallis, who promotes the likes of Diana Krall and Norah Jones.
