Although
this is bassist/guitarist/flautist Paula GardinerÁs third album as a leader,
she is an oddly undersung figure.
This situation may well be changed for the better by this wide-ranging but satisfyingly cohesive recording, which features her playing on all three above-mentioned instruments, her sonorous, intensely melodic bass and delicate yet strong guitar centring her trioÁs sound, whether theyÁre addressing her bright, clear, folkish themes or skilfully interacting in freer mode.
Saxophonist/flautist Lee Goodall is a robust but sensitive presence throughout, and drummer Mark OÁConnor ditto, but it is Gardiner, in both her instrumentalist and composer roles – the latter seeing her move easily and unaffectedly between Celtic, South American and African influences as well as operating confidently in the free jazz arena – who draws the ear throughout this versatile, intelligently varied and subtly powerful album.
