To
confirm any suspicion you may have that Tubby Hayes remains a talismanic
figure for many young UK jazz saxophonists, you only have to listen to
Simon Spillett.
Notes tumble promiscuously out of his tenor, jostling each other in their eagerness to register themselves over racing changes, not only on such flagwavers as 'Cherokee' and 'Make Someone Happy', but also on Spillett originals such as the 'I Got Rhythm'-based 'Gee Cross' and 'Another Setting'.
This debut album, on which he's backed by a dream UK rhythm section (formerly doing the same job for Ronnie Scott) ¡ pianist John Critchinson, bassist Andrew Cleyndert, drummer Martin Drew ¡ also showcases Spillett's tender, lyrical ballad style ('Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most'. 'But Beautiful'), but it is the murderously paced material that really grabs the attention and provides such a mouth-watering sample of Spillett's special gift, one that is, no doubt, best appreciated live. A man to watch.
