As
I started to write this I realized just how badly I've bought into the
'more-minutes-is-better mentality' and was going to throw the lazy EP
label at this five track monster out of habit.
But "Knockout" sits nicely with it's distant-in-time cousin, Lou Donadson's 1969 "Say It Loud!, and testifies gloriously in its 33 minutes.
Every song is fully realized and not radio friendly in the least - good funk just can't be stated in 3 minutes increments. It's got to go long (and loud) enough to make the neighbours upstairs call the management or you just haven't done the job to its righteous end.
The deep funk of "Lick Du Jour", the heart stabbing Hammond of "Blue Donald's Son", the blues-fused "Three Foot Stumble", the frantic rolling gospeled "Knockout", and the supa-funk "Get Down". It's a mutha of a soulfood sampler plate.
Killer horns and cooked just right organ, and apparently yet another long lost son of the mighty Grant Green has been found. Love 'em and you'll never leave 'em.
