Described
(in their label's press releases) as a 'contemporary-pop-punk-ethno-composers
quartet from Austria, Czech Republic and Turkey', combining the 'top musicianship
of a classical quartet, the energy of a punk band and the hooks of a kick-ass
pop band', Metamorphosis demonstrate on this, their second album for Leo,
an ability to move uncontrivedly between all the above genres, producing
wholly original music from their unusual instrumental mix (acoustic and
electric guitars, violin and cello).
From naggingly memorable, even pretty compositions to raucously harsh, fierce pieces (one involving visions of skyborne walruses at the North Pole), Metamorphosis's music is occasionally reminiscent of the slow-building, string-based, faintly melancholic skirl of Monroe Transfer (although Metamorphosis write songs as well as instrumentals), but for the most part it is entirely sui generis, haunting, atmospheric, replete with startling dynamic and textural contrast, compulsively playable, perfect 'Late Junction' fare. Recommended.
