'[A]
subtle yet explosive mixture of intellectual rigour (composition, improvisation.
complexity and form) and emotional depth (related to its expression)' is
pianist Yaron Herman's definition of music in the notes to this, his fourth
album, and it sums up his approach pretty well.
Energetic, tumultuous pieces are intelligently interspersed with more lyrical playing, whether he's addressing his own compositions, works by Alexander Argov or Naomi Shemer, Dizzy Gillespie's classic 'Con Alma' or (as on his previous album) a tune associated with Björk; there are also a couple by bandmate, bassist Matt Brewer.
Completed by the excellent drummer Gerald Cleaver, Herman's trio demonstrate all the hair-trigger mutual responsiveness that results from extensive touring, and their dynamic control and textural variety is exemplary.
Herman himself is a fluent, often pleasantly florid but always controlled player, his considerable power tempered by an affecting lyricism, particularly effective on the pieces in which the trio is joined by a string quartet, Quatuor Ebène. A fine album, and and one that promises much from the trio's live performances.
