A
trio led by Copenhagen-born composer/bassist Jasper Hoiby, Phronesis (completed
by pianist Magnus Hjorth and drummer Anton Eger) attempts to explore,
in Hoiby's words, 'what can sometimes feel like endless rhythmic possibilities
ê melodic and groove-based, [the music] often plays around with repetition
in order to emphasise and dramatise change when and if it finally occurs'.
Such an approach, while frequently producing pleasingly jerky, sporadically downright nervy music infused with unpredictable dynamic and textural variety, can occasionally result in passages of slightly self-conscious tricksiness, but overall, the fluency and cogency of Hjorth, the propulsive power of Hoiby and the crackling energy of Eger combine to make their debut album (highlight: the fleet but spiky 'Seven for Samba') as absorbing as it is intense – well named, it contains eleven pieces of fiercely interactive, often climactic music growing naturally from the considerable individual strengths of its three participants.
