Outhouse
have been dispensing their driving, often exhilarating music live for
some time now, frequently at the Vortex, the Oxford and similar venues,
but this eponymous album is their first attempt to capture their sound
on CD.
They play a vigorous mix of beefy, clattering riffs, free-ish improvisation and all points between, exploiting the musical rapport between saxophonists Robin Fincker (who doubles on clarinet) and Mark Hanslip, whose horns move between harmonized theme statements, nervy intertwining extemporisation, solo musing and chattering interaction as required by their restless, probing music.
Drummer Dave Smith bristles with energy and commitment throughout, and bassist Johnny Brierley provides solid but supple support and the odd solo • and with guests Kaw Secka (tama on their African-influenced piece 'Japa Seloho') and Jeanne Added (wordless vocals which weave in and out of the reeds playing on three tracks) also skilfully deployed, this is an intense, hard-hitting but well-paced debut which should, by rights, attract many new listeners to their excellent live performances. Recommended.
