Evgeny
Masloboev and his daughter Anastasia received rave reviews for their previous
Leo album, Russian Folksongs in the Key of Rhythm, their collaboration
(she sings, he accompanies her on an extraordinary variety of instruments
and 'found' percussion) described thus by AllAboutJazz: 'Within the eastern
folk attributes of these endearing compositions, Evgeny Masloboev conjures
up the rhythm of life, while his daughter's heavenly chants and endearing
lyricism...add an aura of mystery and spiritualism'.
Change 'the rhythm of life' to 'the inevitable sorrows of existence' (the album is dedicated to Evgeny Masloboev's recently deceased mother), and it applies equally to this startlingly beautiful and affecting album.
Anastasia Masloboeva has one of the purest voices you're likely to hear, and whether it's set against 'natural' sounds (running water, wind), santur (Persian hammered dulcimer) or various percussion effects, it moves and exhilarates in almost equal proportions.
If your neck hair is raised by Sandy Denny, Joanna Newsom or Yanka Rupkina, this beguiling and clearly deeply felt collection of Siberian songs will stir you to your depths. Warmly recommended.
