A
follow-up to last year's Translation Ė Volume 1, Standards &
Previews features the present Dylan Howe Quintet line-up (Howe, drums;
Quentin Collins, trumpet; Brandon Allen, tenor; Ross Stanley/Will Butterfield,
piano; Aidan O'Donnell/Chris Hill, bass) for the last time.
The live standards here are their final recorded hurrah and the previews give a glimpse of Howe's next project, jazz reinterpretations of the Bowie/Eno material from Low and Heroes.
'Just in Time', featuring Collins's bright, sassy, tumbling trumpet, and 'Angel Eyes', centred on Allen's appropriately bleary, after-hours tenor, are the pick of the standards recorded at London's Pizza Express, but there is also an informal, rumbustious tenorĖdrums duo, 'Impressions', recorded as an encore at the Eagle, Rochester; the remainder of the album comprises a solo-drums excursion on Cole Porter's 'Night and Day' and an intriguing visit to the Bowie/Eno material, 'Warszawa', a brooding, atmospheric piece that lends itself surprisingly well to jazz exploration.
The quintet is a neat, cohesive, unshowy unit with a sparky front line, and will be much missed on the UK live circuit; Howe's new project, however, promises much.
