Pianist
John Law, opposite whose trio Tryatarantis recently played, calls them 'a
wonderfully fresh-sounding trio of young musicians who play so easily you
lose sight of the technical accomplishments of all the band members and
just dig the feel … they communicate great joy. I think no one's told them
yet that life's supposed to be difficult.'
They're a trio (pianist Dominic Marshall, bassist David Rees, drummer Sam Gardner) studying at Leeds College of Music, and as Law suggests, they're as at home with relatively conventional piano-trio jazz (chiefly of the pleasantly tricksy, rumbustious variety practised by, say, Curios or Kit Downes's current trio) as with more peripheral contemporary forms, most obviously minimalism.
Reference to this last style, however, should not be taken to suggest that their music is subdued or restrained, merely that it relies for some of its considerable effect on almost hypnotic repetition and the subtle shifts of rhythmic and dynamic emphasis that are commonly associated with the genre.
Marshall's confident, occasionally outright tumultuous playing immediately impresses, but Rees and Gardner are each adept enough to ensure that this is a genuine trio effort, and this mini-CD is well worth investigating.
