Playing
two performances tonight (each approx 70 mins), guitarist Jiannis Pavlidis
and the great American saxophonist David Liebman first collaborated in 2005
when they recorded and toured the UK.
A ‘renaissance man’ in contemporary music, Dave Liebman has played with Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, John McLaughlin, McCoy Tyner and others and has been performing worldwide for over thirty-five years.
Tonight’s sets will include both reharmonized standards and original compositions approached from an ‘open improvisation’ angle. With Jamil Sheriff (Fender Rhodes) and Eddie Hick (drums). ‘(Pavlidis)...astonishing virtuosity combined with wonderful compositions’ (Leeds Guide).

An
afficianado of Charlie 'Bird' Parker’s music from an early age, Django
'knew it was good in the way that I knew that food was good'.
In 2005 Django was asked to contribute to a celebration of the life of Charlie Parker at Copenhagen Jazz House and used the occasion to arrange compositions that he most associated with Parker – Scrapple From the Apple, Hot House, Billie’s Bounce, Laura, My Little Suede Shoes, Now’s the Time…
The acoustic piano trio is a constellation beloved of jazz listeners and players throughout the world and this is the format Django decided to use for his exploration of Bird’s music.
Belovèd Bird are Django Bates (piano), Peter Bruun (drums) and Petter Eldh (double bass). ‘Belovèd Bird’ (Lost Marble LM004) will be released on 29 March 2010.
'I believe there is no point in recording unless one has something special to say. Now’s the time to say something special; Bird LIves!' (Django Bates).
Concert to be recorded BBC Radio 3 Jazz on Three
A
collaborative project between percussionist Thomas Strønen and keyboard
player Ståle Storløkken, both stalwarts of the legendary Norwegian
label Rune Grammofon.
The duo's live performances comprise a thorough deconstruction of free jazz, improv, and electronica idioms, executed with mesmerising precision and inventiveness. Demands to be experienced first-hand.
Plus...
By turns meditative, abrasive and enigmatic, plaintive melodies and subtle timbres are buried beneath layers of chugging electronics and skittering percussion.
Alex Bonney (electronics, trumpet), Tim Giles (drums) and Sam Britton (electronics).
Ex-Pentangle
leader John Renbourn and ex-Incredible String Band leader Robin Williamson
have toured together, billing themselves as the Impenetrable String Tangle.
The live album 'Wheel of Fortune' captures the spirit of that tour, showing how well the two multi-instrumentalists mesh together. Williamson's fascination for obscure early instruments, like the Celtic harp, gives an authentic feeling to Renbourn's medieval melodies, while Renbourn's extraordinary guitar playing grounds Williamson's flights of fancy.

Sunday 28 March

Three chaps on stage; the oldest charging around in a tie dye jacket singing, spouting, spitting, grabbing ideas from the air.
Tuesday 30 March
Rousing and affecting music, incorporating Middle Eastern, Balkan and Gypsy with metal overtones. Imagine a lyrical rock band led by an accordion...
