ALEX BONNEY QUARTET (with special guest George Crowley) + UNKLAR

A double bill highlighting the close links between the new jazz scenes in London and Paris

ALEX BONNEY QUARTET (with special guest George Crowley on tenor sax and clarinet)

Alex Bonney’s quartet play original compositions with plenty of space for collective improvising with a nod to the American and European legends of free jazz. The band members are some of London’s most in demand improvisers. They have recently released an album entitled ‘Halda Ema’ on Loop records.

‘It is so rare now to hear music of this fine transparency and that brave daring so gently expressed that points you Cherrywards, back to the birth of free jazz even if by no means is this a tribute band, and more importantly forward to unnavigated jazz futures that Cherry ever the pioneer was always about….Bonney is fast becoming one of the more involving avant trumpeters of his generation’  – Marlbank

Alex Bonney – cornet, compositions
James Allsopp – bass clarinet
Olie Brice – bass
Jeff Williams – drums
George Crowley – tenor sax and clarinet

“Both Bonney, with his sparing but telling use of vibrato and vocalised tones, and Fincker, whose controlled fervour seems more impressive with each successive Vortex appearance, set a sensible course between the Scylla of outright re-creation of the Ayler brothers’ sound and the Charybdis of using their material merely as a springboard for frolics of their own; An unexpected treat.”
