Now in its seventh year together the Alex Merritt Quartet (Alex on saxophone, John Turville on piano, Sam Lasserson on bass, Jeff Williams on drums) has developed a unique and exciting group sound and approach that can be
clearly heard whether the band are playing Alex’s original material or standards.
This gig builds on the success of their debut album Anatta that was
launched at the Vortex in december ’15. The album received fantastic
reviews being described by John Fordham as “A promising jazz debut of
striking quality” and Marlbank’s Stephen Graham as “..one of the best
UK jazz recordings I’ve heard this year”.
Alex is excited to return to the club with a set that will blend new
original music written over the last year with choice jazz standards
and possibly even some selections from Anatta also. Alex’s
compositional approach owes as much to contemporary classical music as
jazz and in this set will be nods to Alexander Scriabin, Peter Schat
and the Second Viennese School as well as John Coltrane and Joe
Henderson.’
