Dock in Absolute

Exciting young European trio centred around pianist Jean Philippe Koch’s powerful original compositions and virtuoso playing.

Their latest album was released on the prestigious Camjazz label (home to the likes of albums by favourites such as Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor and, more recently, Oregon and Tom Hewson) to great acclaim. This is their first visit to London, as they will also be playing at the Liverpool Jazz Festival.

With a shared love of jazz, the members of Dock in Absolute combine different styles
of music from progressive Jazz to classical and rock music, all centred around pianist
Jean Philippe Koch’s powerful original compositions and virtuoso playing.

Hailing from Luxembourg, the trio has presented its music internationally at many
Festivals including the Tokyo Jazz Festival, the Hong Kong International Jazz Festival,
Edinburgh Jazz Festival and Paris Jazz Festival à la Cité, amongst many others.
They were one of the highlights of last year’s Südtirol Jazz Festival where we first heard them, and come from a country where the jazz scene is becoming one of the main ones to watch, with the likes of vibraphonist Pascal Schumacher.

A very disciplined outfit, there was a baroque underpinning to Koch’s compositions wedded to an indie rock feel.

What’s immediately striking about the music that comes out of this trio is how formidably certain it is. An album packed with fascinating composition as well as terrific playing.

Each number built up to a climax in a way that reminded me of the early Neil Cowley Trio.
