SUMMARY:Enzo Zirilli Zirobop
DESCRIPTION:Hailing from Turin Drummer/Percussionist Enzo Zirilli arrived in London in 2004 to become one of the most sought after drummers on the London scene and beyond\, working with the likes of Jim Mullen\, Stan Sulzmann\, John Etheridge\, Tom Harrell and Jason Rebello\, to name but a few.\n\nIn 2014 he formed the band “ZiroBop” with Italian guitar maestro Alessandro Chiappetta and two English rising stars; guitarist Rob Luft\, who has toured with Dave Holland’s Youth Big Band\, and bassist Misha Mullov-Abbado\, who has recently won the Kenny Wheeler prize for composition and arrangement and is now a BBC New Generation Artist. Zirilli is said to have that Paul Motion-like rare skill of allowing the space and subtle energy to do the hard work\, playing with an economy that makes every percussive beat and brushstroke count double in its meaning and intensity.\n\nWith such a line-up\, you might think that it's an updated gypsy jazz group. Musically\, the answer is 'No Way'\, but in terms of energy\, enthusiasm and fun\, it could well be.\n\nTonight Enzo and the band will be playing music from their second ZiroBop album "Ten to Late"\, with a mix of classic jazz standards\, World music and originals by and from all the members of the band. "Enzo and his great band approach a wide range of material with such creativity\, taste and soulfullness" Larry Goldings; "4 exceptional musicians! A unique and varied repertoire beautifully rendered by this special group. Fantastic guitar....an amazing foundation of different grooves....Everyone here is playing on the highest leve...shows the maturity and adventurousness of all involved!" Peter Bernstein; “Luft…an extraordinary talent!” BBC Radio 3\n\nPlease note: the concert by Bruno Heinen is being rescheduled soon. Watch the web site.\n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/Ave3gKowXkw[/embed]

SUMMARY:Loz Speyer's Inner Space
DESCRIPTION:\n\nLoz Speyer’s Inner Space\n\nLoz Speyer - trumpet\, flugelhorn\nChris Biscoe - alto sax\, alto clarinet\nRachel Musson - tenor sax\, soprano sax\nOlie Brice - double bass\nGary Willcox - drums\n\nLoz Speyer’s Inner Space plays jazz of a rare warmth and immediacy. Combining rhythmic changes with references that synthesize New Orleans\, Bebop and Free Jazz\, each piece of music evolves its own form\, its own balance of structure and freedom\, its own atmosphere. There are audible echoes of Mingus\, Monk\, Ornette and beyond - but as is always vital in jazz\, the key is live\, in the immediacy of these five highly distinctive musicians\, working it all out in the here and now.\n\n**** “The integrity they bring to the emerging free jazz push-pull structure of ’Space Music’ pilots the musicians further towards destinations unknown.” Philip Clark\, Jazzwise\n\nThis summer\, Inner Space take their 2017 album “Life on the Edge” on the road\, along with new compositions and collectively composed music\, for an 11 date tour of the UK - starting at the Verdict\, Brighton on 12 April and finishing at the Vortex London on 26 June 2018 – with Arts Council support.\n\nFor the new music commissioned for the tour\, Loz Speyer is writing a series of “portraits” dedicated to particular Jazz innovators - John Stevens\, Steve Lacy\, Sun Ra; and\, in a new direction for Inner Space\, there will be music collectively composed by the whole band\, assembled and developed in rehearsal and evolving during the tour.\n\nThe tour is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.\n\nwww.lozspeyer.com\n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8ipaili298[/embed]

DESCRIPTION:Alexander Hawkins - piano\nMatt Gough\, Aaron Diaz\, Mike Soper\, Laura Jurd – trumpets\nKieran McLeod\, Rich Foote\, Raph Clarkson\, Yusuf Narcin – trombones\n \n\nThe Great British Brass Band – but not as you know it! Speckles Brass play freely improvised music drawing on a hodgepodge of influences as diverse as the musical interests of its members – poetry\, art\, dance\, new sounds\, classical harmony\, grungy blues and more – it’s all in there! Established by Raph Clarkson and Kieran McLeod in January 2016\, Speckles have thus far collaborated with unique and creative improvisers including Joe Wright (sax)\, Julie Kjaer (sax\, bass clarinet and flute) Sarah Gail Brand (trombone) and Mia Marlen Berg (voice). Their work has also encompassed projects with dancers and visual live-score systems for improvising\, and they are currently developing community projects exploring the possibilities of improvising and conversing through sound with nursery-age children. Here\, they play with the extraordinary Alexander Hawkins\, whose enormous range of musical expression and language is sure to spark an exciting\, surprising and richly textured collaboration.\n\n \n\n[embed]https://soundcloud.com/speckles-brass[/embed]\n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:AARON PARKS & LITTLE BIG (2-NIGHT RESIDENCY)
DESCRIPTION:Aaron Parks – piano\nGreg Tuohey – Guitar\nDJ Ginyard – Bass\nTommy Crane – Drums\n \n\nPianist Aaron Parks released his Blue Note debut “Invisible Cinema” at the age of 25 following three Blue Note releases with trumpeter Terence Blanchard. The BBC declared it “one of the great albums of 2008.” JazzTimes hailed him as “a new visionary.” The San Jose Mercury News named his “Alive in Japan” release as their 2013 Top Jazz Album of the year. He has released two albums on ECM including a solo piano album and a trio record featuring Billy Hart and Ben Street.\n\nLittle Big\, the new band from pianist/composer Aaron Parks\, could in some ways be seen as a continuation of the trajectory set on his 2008 record “Invisible Cinema\,” with a deeper commitment to melodic songwriting\, modern rhythms\, and immersive storytelling. With members Greg Tuohey (guitar)\, DJ Ginyard (electric bass)\, and Tommy Crane (drums) bringing their experiences not only from jazz and improvised music but also electronica\, R&B\, indie pop\, alt-country\, and much more\, this is genre-fluid music which creates a world of its own.\n\nParks has performed and recorded with Kurt Rosenwinkel\, Dhafer Youssef\, Terri Lyne Carrington\, Ambrose Akinmusire\, Gretchen Parlato\, Kendrick Scott\, and Marcus Miller\, among others. He is also a founding member of James Farm with Joshua Redman\, Matt Penman and Eric Harland. His latest project “Aaron Parks & Little Big” will debut in 2018.

SUMMARY:Howard Riley\, Barry Guy\, Lucas Niggli TRIO
DESCRIPTION:Howard Riley (piano)\n\nBarry Guy (double bass)\n\nLucas Niggli (drums)\n\nThe working association of Howard Riley with Barry Guy started back in the 1960s. It may be relatively little known\, but is of vast significance. Riley and Guy have been involved for many years in a deep exploration of the piano trio and how it can be redefined. “Reinventing the piano trio” was how Duncan Hei- ning described this process in an in-depth article about Riley.\n\nRiley and Guy worked together consistently\, and led their innovatory evolu- tion jointly and from the front\, but they always knew they wanted to work with different drummers. Riley and Guy have also played together in other groups\, such as the London Jazz Composers Orchestra. Indeed Riley even wrote several compositions for the LJCO. For their Vortex concert the huge energy and vitali- ty of Swiss drummer Lucas Niggli will be powering the Howard Riley Trio – a very exciting prospect!\n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/XVGERPBdy0U[/embed]\n\n

SUMMARY:Jean-Michel Blais: Dans ma main
DESCRIPTION:Jean-Michel Blais \n\nDans ma main\n\nDans ma main\, the sophomore release by pianist and composer Jean-Michel Blais\, is an expansive album of post-classical piano with strands of electronic detail. Blending his conservatory skill and precise pop sensibility with synthetic accompaniment\, Blais creates unique environments where the piano’s intimacy can be subtly disrupted at any time.\n\nGrowing up in rural Quebec\, Blais began writing original compositions by age 11\, and by 17 was invited to the Trois-Rivières Music Conservatory. However\, the constraints of formal training drew Blais off this musical course\, putting aside his piano until years later\, settling in Montreal\, he rediscovered his love.\n\nDans ma main explores an everyday life awash in spirituality\, stemming from Blais’ interplay with music as therapy. Compelled by the cathartic air that audiences exude in his pin-drop performances\, Blais considers how music has served as a tool of wellness in his own life. From his prior career in special education\, to the role classical and ambient music played soothing the Tourettic symptoms he experienced as a child\, Jean-Michel’s new compositions subconsciously call upon these periods of his life\, reimagining a serenity he had only experienced seated at the piano.\n\nLargely composed in one week of open exploration\, Blais comes closer to the improvisational source of his writing\, painting impressionistic stories within the fluid\, indefinite outlines of dreams. Dans ma main rolls like clouds of nostalgic fog blown away on a clear wind\, at once recalling and signifying the end of Il\, his critically acclaimed 2016 debut album.\n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/WNlhDmfjQcU[/embed]\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Perpetual Motion Machine
DESCRIPTION:Sam Dunn: guitar\nJamie Taylor: guitar\nRiley Stone-Lonergan: tenor sax\nBen Lowman: tenor sax\nSpencer Brown: bass guitar\nSteve Hanley: drums\n \n\nThe Perpetual Motion Machine blends improvisational rock with jazz\, surrounding the listener with its stereoscopic twin guitar/twin tenor sound.\n\nFollowing a 16-date UK tour last Autumn\, in support of the debut album “Ignition”\, the Leeds-based Perpetual Motion Machine brings its distinctive brand of improv to The Vortex on Monday 23rd July. The essence of PMM is its unusual lineup of twin guitars and twin tenor saxophones\, creating a cinemascopic sound that surrounds the listener. Sam Dunn's intricate post-bop lines on stage left meet the art-rock inflections of his guitar partner Jamie Taylor to stage right. Likewise\, the saxophone pairing of Riley Stone-Lonergan and Ben Lowman\, which delivers everything from ferocious free jazz and funk\, through to exquisitely poised melody whenever the machine engages its slower gear. Bassist Spencer Brown and drummer Steve Hanley not only underpin the above with febrile grooves\, but feature equally prominently throughout as solo voices.\n\n“Keep an eye on the Leeds jazz scene – so much adventurous and interesting music coming to the surface just lately. Case in point\, the Perpetual Motion Machine" Stuart Nicholson February 2018\n\n“At one end\, chicken-scratch guitar that sounds like the work of some disgustingly lecherous space cockerel. At the other end\, gently propulsive ostinati and the grandfatherly [sampled] voice of poet ‘Skylark’ Durston. In between...feral free improv\, all wailing saxes and face melting guitars. I’m genuinely excited to hear what PMM comes up with next.” Thomas Rees\, Jazzwise May 2018\n\n"Perpetual Motion Machine utterly ripped the JATP rug here. Only the second night of their "Ignition" tour and there's flames lickin' out the back already. Only God knows what they'll be like by the time they reach Aberdeen but it will have to be super-special if the JATP gig is any measure. Stunning - a MUST see!" Martin Powell\, Jazz At The Priestley\, Bradford\, September 2017\n\n"With a line-up like this\, the risk is that the music will be of the ‘wall of sound’ variety. But these are jazz musicians after all; it is a special musical treat to see the musical differences between two instrumentalists played out in an improvisatory setting." J.Whitman\, Wakefield Jazz\, April 2018\n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/KXvY47AdSxU[/embed]\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Dimitri Howald - guitar & composition\nMichael Gilsenan - tenor sax\nLeoni Altherr - vocals\nTom Millar - piano\nJames Krüttli - double bass\nTobias Schmid - drums\n \n\nSwiss composer and guitarist Dimitri Howald has\, with his band ILJA\, created a six-headed mythical beast\, a fantastic\, romantic creature whose limbs reach out in all imaginable harmonic directions. Yes\, this thing sprints at 180 miles per hour\, barefoot\, straight as an arrow\, light and free. Its voice a mixture of horn and guitar\, its claws drum\, tap\, brush\, until the song fades out\, and night closes in over the tundra. Howald sends his six-headed\, twelve-handed being\, sometimes veering off course\, sometimes singing as one\, out into the wilderness - a godforsaken place whose bland emptiness is waiting to be filled with delicate poetry\, playful rhythms and the harmonies of modern jazz.\n\nhttp://dimitrihowald.ch\n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/nMCOAqiUb9c[/embed]\n\n

SUMMARY:Partisans (first night of two)
DESCRIPTION:Phil Robson - guitar\n\nJulian Siegel - tenor sax and bass clarinet\n\nThaddeus Kelly - bass\n\nGene Calderazo - drums\n\n \n\nSince their formation in 1996\, Partisans have been thrilling audiences the world over with their ferociously energetic performances of tightly knit themes and with great freedom coming from their years of playing together. Hailed as breaking the ground for the new wave of British jazz in the late 1990s\, Partisans is co-led by two of the pre-eminent musicians of their generation\, Phil Robson (guitars) and Julian Siegel (tenor sax & bass clarinet)\, the quartet's line-up is completed by Thaddeus Kelly (bass) and Gene Calderazzo (drums). Partisans are a real band – with a cult following in their native UK\, 5 celebrated albums\, including the award winning 'Swamp'\, years of performances around the globe\, and known for bridging the gap between New York Swing\, European Improv and UK Rock. The band has developed a distinctive sound of its own where the combination of each member’s influences feeds a genuine creative spark generating huge excitement and energy. The richly lyrical and strongly melodic compositions written by Robson and Siegel\, provide the framework and starting point\, underpinned by the rock solid\, freewheeling and supercharged rhythm section of Kelly and Calderazzo.\n\n‘Restless\, almost reckless energy..delirious listening...consistently thrilling’ - BBC Music magazine\n\n“These Guys Are Super Badass!” - Ken Pickering\, Vancouver International Jazz Festival\n\n'One of the most exciting all star experimental groups in Jazz today' - BBC Radio Jazz on 3\n\n[embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHO4oi_Ws9w&list=PLZuYfgcmwEJXQJwO0NbMDX4qyRjhXt_M2&index=4[/embed]

The band is currently working on a full length album.\n\n“Their sound invokes wonderfully deep ambiance while at the same time containing thoughtful lyrical lines. Exceptionally well constructed music with a genuine appeal to a broad church of jazz fans.” Dominic Reilly\, dublinjazz.ie\n\n“The talent and intricacy in this EP alone is incredible; we need to hear more from this group!” Red Keane - Founder of Jazz Ireland.\n\n[embed]https://youtu.be/aqgLECSqb7o[/embed]\n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Vula Viel & Velvet Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Velvet Revolution\n\nDaniel Erdmann is an active member and co-leader of many bands. But in a decade or so he imagined a certain sound for a trio\, and looked for and finally found the musicians who would allow the anticipated sound to become a reality. French violinist Théo Ceccaldi contributes something from the grand French string tradition\, as well as jazz references and something very contemporary: he can wallow in melody\, but also provide abstract\, percussive action. Daniel knows Jim Hart from a visit to London\, where the vibraphonist\, who now lives in France\, was one of the\ncofounders of Loop Collective. With its luminous sound\, the vibraphone reinforces the chamber music like magic of the trio. Jim Hart brings a rhythmic competence\, which in the case of this trio\, doesn’t even need drums.\n\nVelvet Revolution won the Echo Jazz 2017 (the german version of the Grammy award)\, and the German Record Critics Annual Award 2017.\n\nVula Viel\n\nForward-thinking UK trio Vula Viel release their sophomore album\, ‘Do Not Be Afraid’ on 25th January 2019\, continuing their unique musical journey centred around the Gyil (Ghanaian xylophone). Join them on 19th November for the album's single release including exclusive single streaming with album pre-orders.\nThe band’s new set confidently weaves sparse polyrhythms and intricate rhythm structures around bandleader Bex Burch’s Gyil lines and take the instrument’s sound into new territory\, with bassist Ruth Goller (Acoustic Ladyland\, Melt Yourself Down\, Rokia Traore) and drummer Jim Hart (Cloudmakers\, Ralph Alessi\, Electric Biddle) introducing a rough\, post-punk edge to the band’s sound.\nDescribed as “Ghanaian minimalism”\, with the unassuming ability to blur the lines between atmospheres – Vula Viel’s sound may nod to Steve Reichian jazz\, but influences don’t stop there: one can hear echoes of Bill Laswell and the irresistible energy of Arthur Russel.

SUMMARY:Cassie Kinoshi's Seed Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Formed in early 2016\,  SEED Ensemble is a ten-piece band led by alto saxophonist and composer Cassie Kinoshi.\n\nThe project presents a stellar line-up featuring some of London’s most up-and-coming young jazz musicians including tuba player Theon Cross and tenor saxophonist Chelsea Carmichael. Combining jazz with inner-city London\, West African and Caribbean influenced groove\, SEED explores a blend of genres through both original compositions and arrangements.\n\n" The richness of the band’s melody\, harmony and solo is something we can attest to and that got the crowd going. SUMMARY:Patchwork Jazz Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Patchwork Jazz Orchestra are a London-based millennial big band that has no leader but a variety of composers using the ensemble as a platform for fresh sounds and ideas. A factory of sound\, materialising the musical fantasies of a new generation of jazz musicians.\n\nWith such a melting pot of influences and characters\, the music ranges from luscious and sweet melodies to broad walls of sound\, from drum and bass to funeral marches\, from fairytale ballads to calypso. The musical glue binding it together are the 17 musicians that power the vibrations and their universal passion for improvisation. Drawing on the wealth of history of the big band format\, PJO have revamped it into a well-oiled machine that embraces a modern day philosophy of music making.\n\nHaving already met through other smaller ensembles and subgroups\, many members of the band had a desire not only to play more large ensemble music\, but to have the opportunity and environment to write for it. Ideas for the band began forming in early 2014\, and in November that year the 17 piece group made its debut to a sell out audience at the London Jazz Festival.\n\nAfter winning the Peter Whittingham Award in 2015\, the band have hosted their own “Patchwork” nights\, engaging new audiences at unusual spaces in London\, and have just finished recording their first album at AIR Studios\, scheduled for release in early 2019.
