Ronan Guilfoyle’s Bemusement Arcade

Ronan Guilfoyle who has been a major figure in Irish jazz for more than thirty years, presents Bemusement Arcade, his innovative new quartet devoted to expanding the rhythmic language of jazz via the tradition of blues, swing and standards.

Gareth Lockrane is a flautist, pianist, composer/arranger and educator and has had a richly diverse life as musician since studying jazz at the Royal Academy of Music in the 1990s (and also a masters in film scoring at the National Film & Television School), working in many different collaborations and projects.

The project is the latest installment of Melford’s ongoing body of work inspired by and engaging with the work of the American post-abstract expressionist painter Cy Twombly. The bold, sudden action implicit in the trio’s name reflects the energy and motion captured on Twombly’s canvases, a physicality that drives Melford’s exploratory music.

The fruit of a close collaboration with the Music Representations Team at IRCAM-STMS, Ex Machina combines devices based on Dicy2, an artificial intelligence software developed by researcher Jérôme Nika, with real-time music composing and improvisations by the soloists.
