August 2006 gig reviews by Chris Parker
The
following night Jacqui Dankworth filled the club, and
like Malene Mortensen (Thursday 3) mixed originals (swooningly affecting,
folk-tinged songs that brought out all the plaintive loveliness of Dankworth's
voice) with covers of material by the likes of Paul Simon, Ray Charles
and (a great favourite) Ralph Towner.
'Beppo' (which can be heard on Oregon's Always, Never and Forever) has been given a zesty, joyous makeover by Dankworth, complete with appropriately exuberant lyrics, and followed as it was by an achingly beautiful, luxuriantly languorous visit to 'Wild is the Wind' (owing more to Shirley Horn's version from the gorgeous Here's to Life than to David Bowie's on Station to Station), it formed the peak of a classy, assured performance from a singer who should be much more widely appreciated.
