August 2006 gig reviews by Chris Parker
The
first two gigs of August both featured singers. The news that Malene
Mortensen had represented Denmark in the Eurovision Song Contest
did not predispose me in her favour, and neither did a glance at her website,
which concentrates as much on lingerie as on singing, but in the event
(3) she proved to be an extremely capable vocalist with a strong, flexible
voice.
Attendance was disappointing, but she soldiered on, and brought considerable passion to a set divided between covers and confessional originals dealing with the vagaries of romance and related topics.
Her approach draws on soul more readily than on straightahead jazz, so her wordless emoting at tunes' climaxes was always a highlight, but ironically, she scored most heavily with a relatively straightforward version of Joni Mitchell's 'All I Want', which stretched her voice pleasingly, though the self-deprecating humour that resides in the original's wry confessions concerning a desire for shampooing and sweater-knitting was not sufficiently emphasised. Sept points.
