Should you want 'viscerally exciting', look no further than Dreamtime. Typically, they'll state a rousingly anthemic, occasionally downright blistering theme (often with a South African feel to it), then kick it around for a bit, employing the textures and timbres of the free jazz in which the band has its roots.
The free interplay between the three frontline horns (Gary Curson on Mike Osborne-ish alto, Nick Evans on wonderfully expressive, multi-textured trombone and Jim Dvorak on alternately strident and woozy trumpets of various sizes) is the hallmark of the band's sound, and with pianist Keith Tippett filling the odd quieter moment with his trademark mixture of delicacy and power, and bassist Roberto Bellatalla and drummer Jim LeBaigue grounding the whole with their vigorous precision, this was an exhilarating, unequivocally enjoyable night's music.
