December 2006 gig reviews by Chris Parker

John Etheridge

Saturday 23

John Etheridge was joined by Pete Whittaker (organ), Simon Finch (trumpet) and drummer Mark Fletcher for his pre-Christmas gig and turned in his customary rousing, unself-consciously wide-ranging performance.

Starting with a punchy John Scofield number and then playing pieces written by everyone from Nat Adderley to Pat Metheny, his set also including a seasonal visit to 'Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire' (featuring Finch playing a warm flugelhorn solo) and a blisteringly fast version of Dizzy Gillespie's bop flagwaver 'Wee'.

Etheridge himself is in many respects the archetypal Vortex performer – unassumingly virtuosic, witty, jazz-centred but open-eared – and his gig was the perfect way to ease into the Christmas/New Year break.
