Jonathan
Bratoeff provided an opportunity for his superbly accomplished fellow-frontliners,
Ingrid Laubrock and Tom Arthurs, to show off their musical rapport (cf.
the trumpeter's band Centripede) with his intelligently constructed compositions.
Bratoeff himself is a thoughtful, restrained soloist, interested in quietly exploring his tunes' possibilities rather than in the showy effects or blistering runs that characterise many guitarists' playing; characteristically, after one tune, he pointed out that its ending exploited the uplifting qualities of the transition from minor to major.
With bassist Tom Mason and US drummer Chris Vatalaro driving his band, this was an absorbing, rather than viscerally exciting, evening's music.
