Lucid
Dreams is the title of US alto saxophonist Patrick Cornelius's
latest album, and its title track provided one of the highlights of his
quartet gig with Phil Robson.
Cornelius is one of those apparently inexhaustibly fecund soloists who launch themselves into improvisations as if a starting pistol has been fired (cf. Russell Van Den Berg), and on both his and Robson's material ('The Red Horse on the Ocean', 'Reptilian') he poured out a torrent of notes, cascading over the pieces' chord sequences in a wonderful display of controlled exuberance.
Robson specialises in less overtly flamboyant solos, but he explored each piece with his trademark powerful but beguiling mix of single-note runs and punctuating chords, and with the US rhythm team of bassist Michael Janisch and drummer Paul Wiltgen providing a tastefully rumbustious undercurrent of rhythm, this was a standout gig, played in front of an unusually large but typically attentive Sunday-night audience.
