The
week began with two great gigs: on Monday , Ingrid Laubrock and
Liam Noble mixed spontaneous duo saxophone/piano improvisations
with slowly coalescing Monk material, the odd standard, and occasional
modern jazz classic (Mingus's achingly beautiful 'Duke Ellington's Sound
of Love' a particular highlight).
Noble is a pungent, subtly powerful player with a highly original musical mind; Laubrock is one of the most versatile and thoughtful saxophonists, on both soprano and tenor, of her generation, as adept at carving out spontaneous improvisations as picking out an individual yet always startlingly apt path through chord sequences.
