July 2006 gig reviews by Chris Parker
The
first gig of July conforming to my review criteria (by an act new to me,
or containing something I hadn't expected from someone familiar) came
from Monroe Transfer.
A six-piece led by guitarist/composer Nick Gill, the band specialise in slow-building, multi-textured (violin, viola, two guitars, bass and drums is their intriguing line-up), almost hypnotic pieces, that surge into life then hold the attention courtesy of mesmeric repetition, in which the ear is drawn to subtle variations of timbre and rhythm rather than to flashy solos. Uncategorisable, intense, rewarding music that should be more widely heard.
