Rahman achieved the considerable feat of taking the minds of
a respectably sized Friday-night audience off the stifling heat that had
conspired with malfunctioning air conditioning to render the club almost
insufferably stuffy.
Given that her rhythm section comprised bassist Jeremy Brown and drummer Gene Calderazzo, it almost goes without saying that the trio was fiercely interactive, but what most impressed was Rahman's ability to slip subtle variations of rhythm into her playing, so that an already relatively tricksy theme, instead of being merely carefully negotiated, gave rise to all manner of time-based felicities that received that most sincere of all compliments: an involuntary smile of pleasure from the drummer.
