Barb
Jungr always turns in rivetingly dramatic performances, drawing
on sources as varied as Jacques Brel, Bob Dylan, Ray Davies et al., and
even songs connected with Elvis, but on this occasion (worried, as she
put it, that her usual set might prove a little forbiddingly solemn for
the mood of both her and her audience: 'Usually, you can't even cough
without getting shushed'), she concentrated on the blues and gospel songs
appearing on her forthcoming Linn album.
Discreetly supported by the piano and singing of Jenny Carr and the harmonica and keyboards of Jessica Lauren, Jungr touched a satisfyingly broad variety of bases: Curtis Mayfield, Jimmy Reed, Dylan, Bo Diddley and other songwriters provided one of the most affecting voices in the music (unrivalled for textural and dynamic control, her singing, like that of Billie Holiday, gaining direct access to listeners' emotions courtesy chiefly of its plangent timbre) with two perfectly paced, hypnotically absorbing sets.
Jungr's choice of material, her stunning voice and persuasive intelligence with a lyric are impressive enough; add her ease and breezy informality with a club audience, and you've got an unbeatable evening's entertainment.
