'Power
trios', which underwent something of a vogue in the late 1980s, are generally
spearheaded by a head-banging guitarist and powered by a fearsomely loud
drummer (Power Tools, with Bill Frisell in rock mode and Ronald Shannon
Jackson pounding out the beat springs to mind), but the term might appropriately
be applied to the group, Inner Noise, led by Asaf
Sirkis.
In Mike Outram Sirkis has found a rara avis, an electric guitarist who builds tension into his playing, and erupts occasionally into glorious climaxes, mainly by means of rhythmic subtlety and controlled power rather than via pedal-produced pyrotechnics or screaming volume; in keyboardist Steve Lodder, he has, simply, one of the most skilful selectors of texture and 'voice' (from church and pipe organ to all manner of pianistic effects) currently operating in the music.
With Sirkis, an intense, rapt drummer able to summon up thunder and the most deft delicacy with equal ease, urging the band on through his haunting compositions, this was an exhilarating gig that enraptured a decent-sized mid-week (Wednesday, 21) audience.
