Saturday-night
gigs featuring singers are generally hugely enjoyable, informal affairs
at the Vortex, and in Liane Carroll, the tradition finds
one of its most skilful exponents.
Humorous banter with the audience slips almost imperceptibly into medleys of originals, material by the likes of Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits, and the odd striking feature (on this occasion a rolling version of 'Sinner Man'), and there's always a chance of guest appearances at the end of the second set.
Ian Shaw and Jacqui Dankworth provided the harmonies and alternate lines on this occasion, and the whole performance proved just what a treasure Carroll is, drawing her material from widely disparate areas of rock, pop and jazz, but always making the songs her own, courtesy of her engaging stage personality and inimitable pianistic talent.
