June 2006 gig reviews by Chris Parker
'Gospel, soul hip-hop and, of course, jazz' was what drummer-of-the-moment Troy Miller promised from his CD-launching gig.
In the event, this was roughly what the quintet produced in two storming sets in front of a decent crowd, Jean Toussaint spearheading a pleasingly rackety band anchored by the full-bodied bass sound of Phil Donkin.
Guest vocal spots were performed by Xantone Blacq, who proved to be not only an affecting soul-jazz singer, but also an enthusiastic scatter in tandem with Toussaint.
With Femi Temowo playing controlled, absorbing guitar and Andrew McCormack his customary imaginative self on piano, this was a lively, accessible gig, and a great showcase for Miller's new album, 40 Days (J'Noir/Teya Records).
Film music is an area approached by quite a few jazz musicians (the recently deceased Hilton Ruiz, for example, was just getting established in it; Mark Isham makes a pretty good living from it; Roy Budd produced a number of evocative film scores etc.), but, unlike songs from musicals, it hasn't provided the jazz world with a body of standard material.
