June 2006 gig reviews by Chris Parker
The
World Cup Jazz Ball season, meanwhile, proved a great
success, musicians providing everything from witty commentary on, to emphasis
of the pathos of, the on-screen footballing events to which they were
spontaneously reacting.
Specific, if somewhat esoteric, references hidden in song-titles (my own suggestions would be Steve Winwood's 'Arc of a Diver' for Thierry Henry, 'Everything Happens to Me' for Michael Owen, 'Don't Blame Me' or 'I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan' for Sven, 'I Can't Get Started' for Theo Walcott, 'I'm Shooting High' for Frank Lampard, 'All by Myself' for Wayne Rooney etc. etc.) formed the bulk of the music, but the slowly building menace of free kicks just outside the box, conveyed by Jaws-type music, or the cartoonish 'wa wa wa' that greeted shots way off target rendered the whole experience memorable; it was also refreshing to be part of a crowd that greeted England goals with a polite murmur of interest rather than an exultantly triumphant roar.
