Two
hundred saxophones, some ranged along the balconies overlooking Gillett
Square, others in the area itself, provided a spectacular and oddly moving
opening for the London Jazz Festival.
Andy Sheppard, Tony Kofi, Orphy Robinson and James Morton were the chief begetters, but the supporting cast (including our own Oliver Weindling – Vortex director) played their parts to perfection, creating a solid wall of saxophonic sound from which the piece's pleasingly strident theme and occasional solos emerged.
Memories of Urban Sax on the South Bank in the 1980s were prompted in the older witnesses, and the Square can consider itself well and truly christened.
