One
of the club's most dependable attractions, Ian Shaw,
gave a typically intimate, breezily informal but unaffectedly virtuosic
performance, taking in everything from Cole Porter's 'Get Out of Town'
(dedicated to Mel Tormé via a characteristically amusing anecdote
involving an Amsterdam brothel and a neckbrace) and sensitive visits to
'Angel Eyes' and 'Skylark' to a couple of songs ('Night in the City' and
'Talk to Me') from his latest Joni Mitchell-composed album.
Instead of his customary solo performance (during which he accompanies himself on piano), however, Shaw had Dave Preston with him, and he was thus able to air pieces from his forthcoming album, composed with the guitarist.
'Pamela', one such, was a touching schooldays-reminiscence song with an appropriately tender melody; if it's typical of the rest of the pair's collaborative efforts, the (Linn) album will be well worth investigating. Another unequivocally enjoyable performance from one of the UK's most assured and skilful acts.
