Wit
and dexterity' were promised from Oren Marshall and both
were provided in spades in an infectiously exuberant performance from
his Charming Transport Band, comprised of the leader on tuba with Nathaniel
Facey (alto), plus David Sobiyi (guitar), percussionists Alicia Davies,
Afla Sackey and Yaw Asamodu, and drummer Simon Lea.
Beginning with a solo tuba improvisation incorporating all possible (and some apparently impossible) noises, the band rattled through an irresistibly sparky set of rumbustiously rhythmic Marshall tunes, underpinned by the leader's solid repeated brass basslines and embellished not only by Facey's tart, agile alto but also by sudden eruptions of hand percussion and the odd contribution from Sackey and Asamodu's Ghanaian bamboo flutes.
Exciting, intense, climactic music, at once immediately accessible and highly original, cheered to the echo by a large crowd – a perfect Vortex evening.
