Taeko
Kunishima played to a respectably sized, appreciative audience,
sharing the soloing spotlight with shakuhachi player Clive Bell and saxophonist
Russell Van Den Berg and playing music of tranquil (and occasionally more
robust) beauty.
Kunishima somewhat undersold herself (admittedly not helped either by a malfunctioning mic or a drunken heckler; the late lamented Ronnie Scott's putdown, 'Yes, sir, I remember my first beer' would have come in handy here) in both her softly spoken announcements and in her somewhat unobtrusive soloing; more attack in both departments might help ensure that her talent receives the attention and acclaim it deserves.
