November 2006 gig reviews by Chris Parker
A
double bill (Monday, 13) drew a very healthy crowd. The duo formed by
Huw Warren and Peter Herbert is now able to draw on just
enough of the mysterious musical telepathy that develops between regular
partners to enable the pair to play without discernible pre-agreed 'landmarks'.
So
their seamless, hour-long set had a freshness and spontaneity about it
that infused the whole occasion with drama and made the odd eruption into
tender melody ('And the Kitchen Sink' the perfect example) all the more
effective for its very suddenness and unpredictability.
The mainstream press frequently tries to tell us that what is loosely termed 'free' music is too 'difficult' for audiences, especially young ones. The rapt and clearly appreciative silence that greeted this set proved this view to be unnecessarily pessimistic.
The large audience proved not a whit less receptive to Herbert and Warren than to the apparently more 'accessible' power funk of Led Bib, who turned in their customary no-holds-barred, full-on performance, aided at its climax by trumpeter Chris Batchelor.
