October 2006 gig reviews by Chris Parker
There's
already quite a good deal on this site about Barb Jungr,
so suffice it to say that her SRO Saturday-night performance at the club
was a faultless display of both singing (of material mostly from her latest
album - see 'Walking
in the Sun' in the CD reviews pages) and her easy rapport with an
audience.
In particular, she told a very funny story about attending a Percy Sledge concert with about forty other aficionados, waiting for the inevitable 'When a Man Loves a Woman', then finding, when asked to sing along, that no one knew the second line (mysteriously absent from my memory, too).
She also related amusing anecdotes from her 'misspent' youth and told us about her mother's view of her repertoire (too gloomy, apparently). A spellbinding yet wonderfully informal performance from one of the most skilful and engaging singers in the country.
