Brian
Abrahams might frequently associate himself, in his more familiar
drumming role, with the freeish end of the jazz spectrum; in his manifestation
as a singer, however, his tastes are relatively conservative, favouring
standard material (he started with a fiercely declaimed visit to 'The
Song is You', took 'Bye Bye Blackbird' apart, then reinterpreted Billy
Strayhorn's somewhat precocious, self-consciously literary classic 'Lush
Life'), backed by a straightahead rhythm team.
Despite a disappointing audience turnout, Abrahams was his customary warm, confiding self, and his molasses-rich voice matches his personality, but his pianist, Dave O'Brien, came close to stealing the show with a series of mid-song breaks remarkable for their originality and versatility; he and bassist Chris Hill are surely musicians to watch.
