Eddie
Parker's Mr Vertigo may, in their leader's semi-ironic words,
'play the same music in the same way' each time they appear at the club,
but it's lively, cheerfully accessible music impeccably performed by Parker's
various flutes, tenor player Julian Nicholas, pianist Pete Saberton, guitarist
John Parricelli and drummer Mike Pickering (with, on this occasion, bassist
Thad Kelly, deputising for Steve Watts).
His tunes inspired by everything from the works of Michel Foucault (Pickering
echoing the rhythm of an opening paragraph with a notated drum solo) to
his desire for world peace, Parker is a skilful and enthusiastic leader/composer
and an absorbing soloist, and his music is sensitively interpreted by
the strikingly warm, warbling tenor of Nicholas (a mysteriously underrated
figure whose profile should be similar to that of, say, Julian ArgÇelles
or Iain Ballamy), Saberton's occasionally idiosyncratic but consistently
apt solos, and Parricelli's intense, carefully structured contributions.
But you needn't take my word for it; a typical Vortex set can be downloaded
from Parker's website
