October 2006 gig reviews by Chris Parker
'Some
of you I've never seen before; and some of you are young!' Thus
Evan Parker, apparently puzzled on being presented with
evidence that his extraordinary art goes on attracting new listeners.
In solo appearances, he generally sticks to soprano, producing a variety of overtones woven into a seamless improvisation that (rather in the way that a single familiar word takes on an odd appearance if looked at long enough) at times sounds like an intuitively interactive group performance; in a trio setting (with bassist John Edwards and drummer Tony Marsh), Parker operates on tenor, buzzing, surging, scribbling and occasionally whispering.
Edwards scrabbles and booms and at odd moments produces percussive slaps from his bass, but it is Marsh who binds the whole together; there are few more reassuring sights in the improvised-music world than Marsh sitting rapt and utterly absorbed at a drum set, his eyes tight shut, his sticks fluttering and skittering over his drums, providing the perfect oil in the machine of the group sound.
