Peters had two deps in for his Monday-night (9) gig: trombonist
Trevor Mires replaced guitarist Dave Okumu and tuba player Oren Marshall
stepped in to provide the bass parts.
This gave the group a 'banda'-type feel to it, a comparison the aptness of which was underlined by their returning to the stage for their second set by playing their way up the stairs in street-band fashion.
Concentrating on material from Peters's new album Su-Ling (see CD reviews), and including a tricksy piece by Misha Mengelberg but finishing their first set with a Carlos Ward number, the quintet brought a whole new range of sounds and textures to the former, and created a rich, gutsy version of the last spearheaded by the piercing, agile alto of Peters himself.
As the flautist/altoist commented, he picks musicians according to their skills and originality rather than for their specific instruments, so replacing a guitarist with a trombonist simply presented the band with the possibility of a different sound-palette, a chance they seized with both hands, producing music in which passion and commitment were conveyed with power and precision, not least by Peters's peerless flute and alto playing. As both composer and leader, he is a man to watch.
