Davy (24) favours a loose, jamming-type group sound, spearheaded
by his trumpet and flugelhorn and driven on this occasion by the hard-swinging
drums of Cheryl Alleyne.
Bassist Darlington Joseph laid down heavy funk lines and contributed crowd-pleasing hammered solos, singer Jo-Hendrix Ndelo crooned over a stew of the above plus tabla and piano.
Overall, this is an approach more interested in hitting a groove, staying there and embellishing it than in more conventional, formal chord-sequence-based improvisation, and this was made overt in Davy's choice of Freddie Hubbard's 'Red Clay' as a set-closer. Creed Taylor would have loved it.
