At
the end of April, the great Brazilian composer/guitarist Guinga visited
the Vortex, and so it was appropriate that Nois4 paid
him the tribute of including a number of his songs alongside favourites
and newish originals in their wholly enjoyable performance in front of
a large, attentive Friday-night crowd.
Monica Vasconcelos has the perfect voice for such music: her diction is faultless, her pitching superb, and her overall approach is flexible enough to accommodate the entire range of one of the richest musical traditions on the planet.
In Ingrid Laubrock, too, she has found an excellent foil; even the most apparently inhospitable chord sequences drew entirely natural-sounding solos from her horns, small gems of compression and controlled power. With Chris Wells (percussion) and guitarist Ife Tolentino driving everything along with verve and delicacy, Nois are surefire crowd-pleasers.
