October 2006 gig reviews by Chris Parker
The US trio comprised of saxophonist Mark Turner, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard filled the club to capacity with an earnestly rapt (and predominantly young) audience, who were treated to a fascinating display of subtly interactive musicianship.
Concentrating on in-band originals (although they did visit compositions by like minds, such as guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, on whose Verve albums both Ballard and Turner are featured), the trio provided what amounted to a master class in delicately intertwined spontaneity, Turner spinning riveting, quietly intense solos from the most abstruse of themes, his ravishing tenor spiralling through the tunes' unpredictable changes, Grenadier and Ballard laying down a solid yet accommodating rhythmic base and occasionally erupting from the ensemble sound to provide cogent solo comments of their own. A very special gig, and a fitting climax to a wonderfully varied month's music.
